Company Background

M K Roark was founded in 1986 and has constructed over seven hundred significant projects to date, including mission critical, industrial, telecommunication and medical facilities, hi-rise and mid-rise buildings, commercial offices, outside plant and public works projects. Many of these projects were also developed by M K Roark, including over two million square feet of multi-tenant telecom buildings (“carrier hotels”).

In the 80’s, M K Roark gained a stellar reputation building high-end commercial office space and quickly expanded its range to include large renovation projects with the office component. Completed corporate headquarter expansions include those for Ryder System, Citicorp, Florida Power & Light, First Union Bank and several other blue-chip firms. We also performed large-scale renovations and expansions for several hotels, including one that we “added” a 17-floor freestanding building to. Our renovation work has also included the retrofit of the facades and public of many large, high-profile office buildings towards repositioning them in the marketplace.

By the early 90’s we were building high-rise buildings as well as very complex and well-known projects such as the Lincoln Road Streetscape for the City of Miami Beach, which re-worked and instantly gentrified an approximately 20 square block section of the City (and was completed on time and under budget to the amazement of onlookers).

At the advent of telecom deregulation in the mid-90’s (given that we had already been building data center and tech-related projects for many of our clients) we began to build switch sites and data center facilities for quickly growing companies such as Global Crossing, Qwest, Genuity, Sprint and a host of others. To provide our clients a single source for traditional construction services as well as construction geared for mission-critical infrastructure, we established our own in-house design and engineering shop.

Seeing the unique opportunity inherent in the explosion of Information Technology and the Internet with the related need for critical infrastructure to support this growth, we expanded our offerings to also include a turn-key set of focused services including feasibility work, real estate development, facilities maintenance and other post-construction services.

The obvious need for our Customers to interconnect and benefit from a very unique set of needs such as high power availability and density led us to develop carrier hotels at many locations in the eastern US. The success of our development projects further refined our education and assured our complete understanding of the unique real estate needs of the information technology industry and mission critical facilities.

The ability to organically grow our capabilities over a twenty-five + year period has enabled us to keep and make use of the hard-won knowledge that we have earned via an impressive diversity of successful projects.
